One of the first things that struck us about Sandhya was her smile. It’s the kind that brightens up a room and you are engulfed in its warm blanket. This sassy 16 year old – who is a terrific basketball player – is a fantastic danseuse and we had a chance to take pictures at her Arangetram !
For the uninitiated, the Arangetram is the debut on-stage performance of a classical art student, after undertaking years of training. It’s like a graduation performance for any art form. In Tamil ‘Arangam’ means a stage and ‘etram’, climbing, thus Arangetram literally means climbing the stage. It refers to the graduation ceremony where the Guru presents his or her pupil to the public. Generally the performance goes on for about three hours. That’s some serious cardio right there!
We were thrilled when her parents asked us to be the official photographers for this special day in their lives. We started the coverage with a few back stage shots, as Sandhya was getting ready. When she walked out onto the stage, she looked gorgeous and a completely different person. As soon as she started dancing, the audience was mesmerized and her confidence shone through. One after the other, she struck a pose like a pro under the watchful eye of her Guru as the orchestra whipped up the classical beats.
Finally the recital came to an end and amidst the loud cheering, Sandhya thanked her crowd. She was so excited about her pictures that she wanted to see some of them in the camera itself. To say the least, she was pleased and so were we!
