On a damp Northwest afternoon, the Redmond community center was abuzz with parents, uncles and aunts, cousins and friends helping out to decorate for Shoham’s rice ceremony. Also known as ‘annaprashan’, it is the first time a baby makes his transition from a liquid diet to solids. ‘Anna’ meaning grain or food and ‘prashan’ meaning to feed, is the baby’s first intake of solid food. Shoham, who is all of 5 months was dressed in a traditional Bengali attire and ready to take on his first morsel! He was charming everyone with his sweet, innocent smiles and coo’s as people around him were rushing to get the venue ready.
Once everything was ready, the priest set up and started performing the rituals to bless baby Shoham and his wonderful family. Decked in gorgeous sarees and traditional Indian wear, the guests started to pour in and soon the venue seemed festive. Shoham’s sweet parents and adorable grand parents sat through the puja before getting our very own guest of honor to the scene. As they prayed over him and blessed him, Shoham decided to take a quick nap in his grandma’s arms! His mamas (uncles) were then called to feed him his first solid morsel of payaash (sweet rice pudding) and what ensued was hilarious! Shoham was intruigued at the first morsel of the sweet kheer, then curious and wanted some more and eventually, he had his fill.
The religious ceremony is generally followed by a fun game wherein the baby is given a few items like books, jewels, food etc. that symbolize learning, wealth or the baby’s love for food. It is believed that depending on what the baby chooses, that will represent his interests in the future. Shoham gave us all a belly of laughs when he ended up picking quite a few things! No matter what his interests are in the future, one thing is certain … this baby will be loved and adored plenty!
